Accepting new patients in Rockville and Frederick, Maryland

Every new patient starts with a short phone call, so you know what we treat, what your insurance covers, and when you can be seen before you book anything.

Bright Horizons Psychiatry — accepting new patients in Rockville and Frederick, Maryland

What we treat, and what we refer out

Most practices leave this off the website and let you find out on the phone. We would rather you know now.

Our providers work on a deliberately narrow set of adult conditions so we can go deep on them instead of covering everything shallowly.

Conditions we refer out

  • Bipolar I
  • Psychosis
  • Substance use disorders
  • Personality disorders

If what you are dealing with falls outside that first list, we will tell you on the first phone call and name specific programs that handle it well. You will not sit through a full intake to find that out.

How to become a new patient

  1. Request a phone consult

Use the booking form or call (240) 599-1001. This first step is a short call with our team — not your appointment with a provider.

  2. Verify coverage, fit, and schedule

We confirm what you need, check that we treat it, run your insurance for your copay, and book your evaluation in Rockville or Frederick.

  3. You complete your intake forms

A secure email link arrives after scheduling. The forms take fifteen to twenty minutes, so your provider can listen rather than type.

  4. You come in

Your evaluation happens in the office. Bring the short list in the next section — that is all you need for the first visit.

What happens at your first psychiatry appointment

Your initial evaluation runs about an hour. Here is roughly how that hour goes, so none of it is a surprise.

  1. First ten minutes

Check in, insurance card, and anything you did not finish on the online forms.

  2. Ten to forty minutes

The conversation itself. Your provider asks what brought you in, how long it has been going on, what you have already tried, what helped, and what did not. Medical history, family history, sleep, and anything you are currently prescribed all come up.

  3. Forty to fifty five minutes

Your provider explains what they think is going on and walks through the options, whether that is medication management, BrainsWay Deep TMS, Spravato, or intramuscular ketamine. You decide together.

  4. Before you leave

You leave with a written plan, any prescriptions sent to your pharmacy, and a follow up already on the calendar.

You will not always leave with a prescription. Plenty of first appointments end with lab work or a records request instead, and that is a normal outcome rather than a delay.

What to bring to your first appointment

Bring these

  • Photo ID, such as a driver's license, passport, or state ID
  • Your insurance card, front and back, or a photo of it on your phone
  • A current medication list with names, doses, and how often you take each one
  • Your completed intake forms (submitted online or printed and filled out). Handwritten notes are not accepted in place of an intake form.
  • A payment method for any copay or deductible

Helpful, not required

  • Records from a previous psychiatrist, including notes or evaluations
  • A list of medications you have tried before and what each one did
  • Recent lab work, especially thyroid, B12, or vitamin D
  • Any vitamins, herbal supplements, or over the counter medications you take
  • Questions you want to ask, written down
  • A family member or friend, if that makes the appointment easier

Insurance we accept

We are in network with Medicare, Maryland Medicaid, and most major commercial plans in Maryland. We verify your specific benefits on the first phone call, before your evaluation is scheduled, so nothing about the bill is a guess later.

Do not see your plan. Call (240) 599-1001. Networks change often, and a plan that is not shown here is frequently still one we can work with.

Do you accept Medicare?

Yes, at both the Rockville and Frederick offices.

Do you accept Maryland Medicaid?

Yes.

Will I know my copay before my appointment?

Yes. We run your benefits on the first phone call, before anything is scheduled.

Is my copay different for telehealth?

No. Follow up visits cost the same whether they are in the office or by video.

What it costs if you are not using insurance

Self pay rates are available for every standard appointment. The initial evaluation is priced differently from follow up visits, and current rates are quoted when you call.

How each treatment is paid for
Treatment How it is paid for
Initial evaluation Billed to insurance, or self pay at a rate quoted on the phone
Follow up visits Billed to insurance, or self pay at a lower rate than the evaluation
BrainsWay Deep TMS Typically covered by insurance with prior authorization
Spravato (esketamine) Typically covered by insurance with prior authorization
Intramuscular ketamine $349 per session, cash based. The initial consultation is still billed to insurance

Call (240) 599-1001 for current self pay rates, or ask when you book.

Why your first visit is in person

Your initial evaluation happens in the office rather than over video. A first psychiatric evaluation covers a lot of ground, and some of what a provider needs to observe simply does not carry over a video call. Once you are an established patient, follow up visits can be done by telehealth from anywhere in Maryland, and that is how most of our patients handle their ongoing care.

Who you will see

We match you with a provider on the first phone call based on what you are coming in for and who has availability at the office you choose.

Questions people ask before booking

How long is a first psychiatry appointment?

About an hour. Follow up visits are shorter.

Do I need a diagnosis before I book?

No. Working out what is going on is what the evaluation is for.

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes. Plenty of patients bring a partner, parent, or friend to the first visit.

Will I get a prescription at the first appointment?

Sometimes. Some evaluations end with lab work or a records request first, which is a normal outcome.

Do you see children or teenagers?

No. We are an adult psychiatry practice.

What if I already have a therapist?

That works well. We handle the psychiatric side and you keep the therapist you already trust.

Can my first appointment be over video?

No. The initial evaluation is in person. Telehealth opens up for follow ups once you are established.

How do I prepare for a first psychiatrist appointment?

Write down what brought you in, how long it has been going on, and every medication you have tried. That is most of the preparation.
