TMS for Treatment-Resistant Depression

What is TMS Therapy?

TMS is a non-invasive outpatient treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain that may be underactive in depression. The magnetic pulses help ‘wake up’ certain parts of the brain, which can help mood, reduce feelings of sadness, and help you feel like yourself again! This treatment is safe, effective, and generally painless.

Before Treatment

You’ll meet with Dr. Etesam, lead Psychiatrist and Medical Director. During this session, he will use gentle techniques to find your specific ‘motor threshold’- basically, the specific spot on your scalp where your brain responds best to the magnetic pulses. This helps him target the right areas of your brain during TMS to get you the best results for depression alleviation.

During Treatment

You’ll simply sit back and relax in a comfortable chair. A helmet will be placed gently on your head, and it will send soft, painless magnetic pulses to the areas of your brain that need a little boost. You might feel a light tapping or a slight sensation in your scalp, but it’s completely comfortable. Each session lasts about 20-30 minutes, and you can unwind during the treatment while watching something on our TVs or listen to music.

After Treatment

You can go back to your normal routine right away. It’s common to feel more relaxed or at ease after treatment, and over time, you will start to notice improvements in your mood. Your provider will guide you on what to expect and how many sessions you’ll need for the best results.

Deleted my review last year because I felt bad but this is getting ridiculous. Earlier this year, because the billing department screwed up, they charged $35 copay instead of $45 per appointment when I saw the nurse practitioner. So we owed a few hundred even though it wasn’t our fault. They bombarded me with emails and even sent us an intimidating letter to my new address in another state (no idea how they got it) asking for the remaining balance and if we didn’t pay they’d escalate. I haven’t been at this clinic since summer of last year and to randomly receive all this was sketch. After going back and fourth with insurance and the billing people, we eventually paid the remaining balance because we had to, even though they screwed up. We paid a few months ago, and I recently received another email still asking for money! This is getting ridiculous and I want this to stop now. I feel harassed and I’m tired of being reminded of this terrible clinic every few months. Now the reason why I originally left a negative review was because of an incident I had with Shelly the nurse practitioner. Basically what happened was after I completely TMS therapy and felt better, I wanted to taper off medication, since I saw no point in continuing since it wasn’t helping in the first place. She got emotional and gave me an ultimatum, either I keep taking meds or she’ll fire me. Didn’t even bring in the doctor to discuss. I wasn’t even given a taper plan after I was fired either, so that was dangerous. I had to sit in the waiting room crying as Shelly printed out my discharge papers and coldly wished me good luck. What kind of treatment was that for a patient that was there for over half a year? It makes no sense that they promote TMS therapy for people with medication-resistant depression (which I have) but will then kick you to the curb after you feel better and wanna taper off the very meds that never helped anyway. Makes no sense at all. These people just want you on meds so they can make money. So yeah expect them to fire you if you express wanting to get off meds after TMS. I’ve been trying to be patient and just let this go but I have to say something since the emails don’t stop. Please leave me alone. Edit: Never said you didn’t deserve to be paid fully, but the fact that your billing team made a mistake and is still sending emails asking for money after we paid is an issue. You’re twisting it as if we messed up, when in reality we paid what we were billed at the time. Take your corpo response somewhere else please. 2nd Edit since they deleted their first response: I get mistakes happen but seeing another email asking for $350 we already paid is extremely stressful especially after having a negative experience. And the reason why the balance wasn’t paid for some time was because your billing department never gave us a reason why we even owed this amount. My dad actually called early this year because they charged his card $350 WITHOUT letting us know, and he told them that was a mistake and that we paid everything we were billed, and they refunded us. But after that they kept reaching out asking for that money. We eventually found out through our insurance (not you guys) what the mistake was. Again you’re acting like we were never proactive in paying. Who’s gonna pay a mysterious large bill without a reason?

I had a truly positive experience during my recent visit to Bright Horizons Psychiatry. From the moment I walked in, the environment felt calm, welcoming, and supportive. The front desk staff were friendly, efficient, and made the check-in process smooth and stress-free. My session with the provider was excellent. They took the time to listen carefully, asked thoughtful questions, and created a safe space where I felt comfortable opening up. It was clear that they were not only knowledgeable but genuinely cared about my well-being and long-term progress. The treatment plan we discussed felt personalized and collaborative, which I really appreciated. Overall, I left feeling heard, supported, and optimistic. I highly recommend Bright Horizons Psychiatry to anyone seeking compassionate and professional mental health care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells in the brain, helping to improve symptoms of depression. TMS is often recommended for individuals who haven’t found relief from antidepressant medications, or when medications are no longer effective. It can also be a great alternative for those who prefer a non-medication option.

TMS doesn’t affect the rest of your body, so it doesn’t cause side effects like weight gain, sexual issues, nausea, dry mouth, or tiredness. The most common side effects are mild scalp discomfort or headaches, which usually get better after the first week of treatment, and for some people, even a few minutes after treatment.

TMS is a great option for individuals with depression who haven’t found relief from traditional treatments like medication or therapy. It’s also ideal for those looking for a non-invasive treatment with minimal side effects. Candidates are able to commit to a series of treatments over a few weeks. If you’re uncertain whether TMS is right for you, a consultation with your provider can help you explore your options.

On average,, many patients start to notice improvements after 2 to 4 weeks of treatment. For some, it may take a little longer, depending on individual factors. Consistent sessions are key to achieving the best results, and your provider will monitor your progress throughout the treatment to make any necessary adjustments.

Yes, TMS is considered a safe treatment. It is non-invasive, with minimal side effects. TMS does not involve medication, so it doesn’t carry the risks associated with drug treatments. It has been thoroughly tested and is FDA-approved for treating depression. As always, your provider will evaluate your individual health needs to ensure TMS is the right option for you.

The effects of TMS therapy can last for several months, with many patients experiencing sustained improvements in mood. Some individuals may need maintenance treatments every few weeks to continue benefiting from TMS. The duration of results varies from person to person, and your provider will work with you to develop a plan for ongoing care based on your progress.
